LPI 102 best options for materials

Switching to the LPI 102 exam, the materials I have found most helpful in preparing for the exam are listed as follows. I haven't actually taken this exam yet but these are the sites I've been using to prepare. As before I'm going to break everything down into two sections, the first section will cover the sites which gave the best overall indepth information on the topics covered by the exam the second section will cover the sites which offered up the best study questions to use in preparing for the exam.

1. To start with the LinuxIT study guide is a good overall source of material and the article "From Power Up to Bash Prompt" by George O'Keefe covers the whole boot process and is a good review of what Linux goes through to boot up, the article also offers up some good exercises in creating your own linux kernel that boots up. Of course the Cramsession guides have always done a good job of giving a good overview of the test, the older versions can be found on Novell's site and the newer one can be found on the Amazon site. Also, on the Amazon site you can find the book "LPI Linux Certification in a Nutshell" by Jeffrey Dean which has always been a good source of information on the exam including the questions at the back of the book. Finally the Unix Review site has two articles covering the LPI exam the first is called "Exploring the new LPI 102 exam" and the second is called "The Top 50 Things to know to Pass the LPIC Exam 102", both are written by Emmett Dulaney. Also the LPIForums site is a good site top keep track of for any other hints that others have posted. One thing I have found is a break down of what questions will be asked on the exam they are as follows:Administrative tasks : 15, Networking Fundementals : 10, Networking Services : 18, Security : 6, Kernel : 5, boot, initialization and runlevels : 3, Printing : 3 & Documentation : 6, Shells, Scripting, Programming and Compiling : 6.

2. The one site I've added to the test sites is the Certification Practice Test. Besides that one site the other sites have remained as good uses still. They are as follows: Real-Questions site, the Testemulation site, and the second site covers the Testemulation site.

As before these sites have remained the ones I've focused on while preparing for the exam, if all goes according to plan hopefully I'll take the test either in Oct or Nov of this year. I'll post how well I do when I go for the test.

LPI Announces Hewlett-Packard Education Services Sponsorship

LPI - LPI News - LINUX PROFESSIONAL INSTITUTE ANNOUNCES HEWLETT-PACKARD EDUCATION SERVICES SPONSORSHIP It's nice to see other big names jumping onboard the Linux train. Unfortunatly, in this case their offering is only on their german language site. There are a few courses provided by HP Linux on their home site: http://www.education.hp.com/curr-linux.htm unfortunatly you have to pay for these and there is very little offered up as a preview.

LPI 101 best options for materials

As promised I'm going to list the sites I've found which are the "best of" sites or the one to focus on when preparing for the LPI level 101 exam. I'm going to break everything down into two sections, the first section will cover the sites which gave the best overall indepth information on the topics covered by the exam the second section will cover the sites which offered up the best study questions to use in preparing for the exam.

1. For the areas with good background material which covers the topics on the certification exam the first place to start is the Cramsession guide available on Amazon, if you want to work with an older version of this guide a free one is available on the Novell site in .pdf format. The "LPI Linux certification in a Nutshell" book is a good book, I borrowed a copy form my local library, along with the LinuxIT study guide that is available online. Also check out the LPI Forums.com site for any other hints or ideas that others might have posted on the forums

2. In regards to which sites offered up the best study questions without a doubt the two to focus on are the Testemulation site and the Real-Questions.com site. Between the two if you can do well on these tests you should pass the actual certification. A second site is located here, which basically covers the Testemulation site.

With these sites in hand you should have everything you would need to prepare for the LPI 101 certification exam. The nice thing about most of these sites is that they are free. The only one which aren't free are the LPI Linux Certification in a Nutshell book which you should be able to borrow from a library and the Real-Questions.com material which should only cost about $40 and well worth the price. I hope this helps some of you out there.

A.P. Lawrence Skills site

A.P.Lawrence Linux Skills Test The A.P. Lawrence Skills site seems to be offering up a beginning skills test for preparing for the Certifications test. Something worth taking a quick look at when getting ready for a certification test.

Hopefully next week I can spend some time reviewing some of the different sites that I have covered and separate the better sites form the so-so sites. If anyone has any other ideas or suggestions as to what they like I'm open for suggestions.

LPI Certification Self-Study Guide

LPI Certification Self-Study Guide David Horton has developed a self-study guide for the LPI exams. Well worth looking at and going through the questions that he has put down. The nice thing about the questions he has put down is he gives an explanation for the correct answers as well as explains why the incorrect answers are incorrect.

Linux jobs favour hands-on ahead of certification

Computerworld | Linux jobs favour hands-on ahead of certification This computerworld article goes into some detail regarding some of the job issues I've talked about here. Basically, hiring managers are looking for people with experience before they look at certifications. Although Joe Poole did mention that a certification will help get an interview but it is no guarantee of being hired, which is at it should be. All a certification should be is for a foot in the door of a company after you have the interview other factors come into play in regards to how well of a fit someone is for the company that is doing the hiring along with other things.

About.com also has an article regarding this same topic which is worth the read.

LPI Forums .com :: Index

LPI Forums .com :: Index It looks like LPIforums is keeping a good list of forums available for preparing for the LPI exams. Well worth the search.

Novell's LPI education site

Index of /lpi/ Some of the material on this site is dated such as the Cram session LPI101 and LPI 102 material is from 2000 even though the last modified date is 20-May-03. There are also a couple of practice exams which can be downloaded in word format too.

Linux Hiring Squeeze???

Linux Pipeline has an article referrencing the dice.com article which everyone seems to be referring to as well as a Yankee group research project which is saysing the job market should be picking up for Linux people. I found a refernce to the Yankee group article on the LinuxToday site.

Red Hat eLearning site

Red Hat has a number of tutorials online for users to take if you want to pay the $$ for them. Unfortunately the only thing RedHat is offering on completion of the course is a certificate of completion which is hugely different than being certified in Red Hat. They also will not verify if someone will be able to go from taking their course to taking the exams, which makes you wonder if their own courses completly cover what their exams cover.
