A Look at SUSE Certification

I know this is an older article written in May 2004, but I just found an article at Unix review.com which reviews the SUSE certification. According to the article, LPI level I certification is a requirement before you can test for any of the SUSE certifications.

Question of the Day

The Question of the Day site is a site which offers up a daily email with questions from different subject matter. Of course they offer up questions for the LPI 101 and 102 exams. this is another way to regularly test yourself with a variety of different questions from different locations.

Also one of their links is to a Unix Introduction course with a picture of Tux inthe upper right hand corner. I'm not sure if that is their way of saying it is a Linux course too. One thing to realize with this course is that it was developed in Sept of 2001 and I don't see anything which has been updated since then!!

another LPI 102 Certification Practice Test

While searching around on the RHCE2B.COM I found some good like for LPI 102 practice test. I haven't had a chance to go to deeply into everthing but I did think it was worth a posting to let everyone know about it. They also have a practice test for the LPI 101 test, too.

Linux Certification interviews available on RHCE2B.COM

RHCE2B.COM is a good web site with a lot of good resources and links to other study materials regarding Red Hat certification. The material is a bit dated but still good. Some of the interviews are with Kara Pritchard, who has since gone on and is currently LPI's Director of Exam Development. Jeff Dean has written several articles on Linux Certification and has written the popular book "LPI Linux Certification in a Nutshell." David Egan has been involved with Red Hat certification along with other interviews he also wrote "DBA's Guide to Databases UNder Linux." There are also interviews with Frank Gronwald and Tom Allred, unfortunately I haven't found much other useful recent information on either of the two. Either way the site is a good collection of links for preparing for the Red Hat Certifications. Enjoy the interviews and the site overall.

Linux Certification in the news

The Linux planet article which we talked about is still going around in Linux circles today. Linux-Tips talks about the same core interview with Scott Meland from Dice with LinuxInsider. The core issue is that in regards to hiring for Linux positions the issue is whether a Linux certification will be the sole determining factor in getting hired, similar to the way an MCSE was used years ago. At some point certifications will come into play as a qualifying factor but that is the only role it should play. All companies should use other qualifying factors to ensure the people they hire are a good corporate match for the company and have the specific skills needed to do what they need to do.

Booting Linux

A couple of good resources for booting Linux can be found at the manpage for Boot, and an article written by George O'Keefe called "From Power to Bash Prompt" which covers the entire boot process. George was a PhD student at the Australian National University when he wrote this piece, which is an excellent description of how Linux Boots.

117-102 Linux LPI tests

I've been able to find 3 sites which have questions in pdf format for someone to view. The first site is obviously the LPI site and their sample questions. These cover the general topic areas and you should be able to understand those topic areas.

The second site is the Elite Certify site and their questions in pdf format.

And the final place I've found is on the 2bcertified web site. According to their site this was last updated in July of 2004. Their sample questions for the 117-102 test can be found here.

Top 50 Things to Know to Pass the LPIC Exam 102

Emmitt Dulaney has an article on the Unix Review site titled "Top 50 Things to Know to Pass the LPIC Exam 102" The article is dated from January 2001 but it does offer up a good start for my second link for the LPI 102 exam. All of the information looks pertinent so this should be a good starter list to begin working from.

My first mention of material for the LPI 102 test was made back on July 8th.

Bromley College

Last week Jack made mention of some sites in Europe which offers up Linux training. Unfortunately for us here in the US most of those were offering up training in Europe. Fortunately, Jack did offer up some good sites with some good information. During the next week I'm going to go through some of those sites and let you know what is good in each site. The first site is from Bromley College which is located in the UK.
Their Linux course offers up some good course notes which cover Linux networking and setting up Disk Quotas.

I know that quotas are covered on the LPI level 1 test and this is another location to find information on the topic.

With this post I'm pretty much finished with any old information concerning the LPI 101 test. If I find anything new of course I'll be posting it, but from here on out I'll be focusing on the 102 test and the Red Hat and Novell tests.

Recent Linux Certification news

First off, thanks Jack for the mention.

In addition Network World has an article out on Linux certification which rehashes what the other articles I've linked to.

In the next couple of weeks I want to go through a few additional sites I've found with some good overview info for the LPI 101 exam. In addition Jack gave some good sites that I want to go further into. After that I'm going to focus on sites that'll help with the LPI 102 test.

Finally Linux Planet is running an article "Linux Skills in High Demand as IT Jobs Pick Up" from what the article talks about employers are currently looking for people with experience right now and overlooking certifications. On the other hand demand for people with Linux skill sets should continue to grow over the next couple of years.

Bradford Learning

Through some conversations and searching around I've seen that Bradford Learning has updated their course material as of July. A sample chapter of the LPI101 covering VI, and a sample chapter of the LPI102 covering the Linux Kernel can be found on the site.

Why is this material important, well to start with it is new material put out to help people pass the LPI exams and the people involved with Bradford Learning are involved with the LPI and CompTIA certification boards. So hopefully this material will directly apply to what the tests actually test.

Linux World

The end of the week is almost here & unfortunately there has been no news coming out regarding certifications. In fact, after Tues there hasn't been much in new news coming out of Linux World.

Oh well, Hopefully in the next couple of weeks I can find some other resources on the internet for preparing for Linux certification.

Conversations

I was talking with another person interested in Linux certification tests earlier today and a number of interesting topics came up. The first was that there was a serious lack of study materials avialable for the LPI cert exams which could quarantee that they covered the LPI exam in depth. I know there are a number of resources online which I've pointed out but unfortunatly there isn't anything out there that will cover everything. The X Window system is one particular area which I've had a hard time in collecting solid information on. I'll keep things updated when ever I can find anything else.

The other two pieces of info that was discussed wasthe serious discrepencies between the SAIR study materials and the SAIR certification tests. I firmly believe that this certification series is a dead test and hasn't been updated by Thomson Learning in what I beleive is about 5 years. This all inspite of the fact that SAIR is releasing new study materials for Linux training. Makes you wonder why someone would be interested in updating their course materials without updating their tests. I also found out that I wasn't the only one who complained of the tests not being updated.

The final piece of info was the the Linux + is still only a general knowledge certification test which from what I've read in other articles I've linked to in previous posts is good for very little.

It looks like the general pathway for Linux certification is to get the LPI first then build towards either the Red Hat series or the Novell series. With LinuxWorld going on this week hopefully I'll have some other news regarding Linux certification.
